From America to Africa let's go over to my colleague Beatrice in Nairobi and Beatrice, the continent is having a strong showing in the big tournament.
AFRICA WORLD CUP TEAMS That's right Erica. Five African teams are playing in the World Cup in Russia. They are Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia, Nigeria, and Senegal. And they're hoping to change Africa's World Cup story. Mahia Mutua has more on that for us now.
Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia, Nigeria, and Senegal. Africa's contenders for the FIFA World Cup in Russia. No African team has ever reached the World Cup semi-finals. So, the teams hope that now's the time to change that. Africa has always had a lot of potential in the tournament. But several challenges have held them back. They include poor preparation, internal strife, as well as tactical errors at key moments. Experts say Nigeria and Senegal will likely get into the second round. Their strategy will determine whether they go beyond that. Nigeria have qualified for more World Cups than any other African team. The Super Eagles are coached by German Gernot Rohr. Players to watch are captain John Obi-Mikel and Victor Moses. Nigeria face Croatia, Iceland, and Argentina in the group stages. Senegal are the second African team to ever qualify for the World Cup quarter-finals. The Lions of Teranga are looking forward to their second World Cup under coach Aliou Cisse. Senegal's talent includes Sadio Mane, who plays for Liverpool. They face Poland, Japan, and Colombia in the group stages in Russia.
Egypt are making a long-awaited return to the World Cup. The Pharaohs have only featured in the tournament three times over 84 years. Coach Hector Cuper will be counting on star player Mohamed Salah, who scored a season record in the Premier League. Egypt are facing Uruguay, Russia, and Saudi Arabia in the group stages. Tunisia are making their fifth appearance at the World Cup. Under the care of Nabil Maaloul, the Eagles of Carthage are known for their resourcefulness. They're facing England, Belgium, and Panama in the group stages. And finally, Morocco have represented Africa four times in the World Cup. Coach Herve Renard is banking on the talents of Mehdi Benatia and Mbark Boussoufa. Morocco face Iran in their opening match, and face highly rated Spain and Portugal in the group stages.
