The Center for China and Globalization, or CCG -- one of the top independent Chinese think tanks in the country and around the world -- celebrated its ten-year anniversary in Beijing on Saturday night. Our correspondent, Jenny Cortes Ybañez, joined in on the celebration and met with some of the ambassadors, scholars and experts in attendance, as they exchanged ideas on the development of Chinese think tanks.
The Center for China and Globalization or CCG, is celebrating its ten- year anniversary. This independent think tank was ranked in the top 100 of its kind worldwide by the "2017 Global Go To Think Tank Index". It's also the first Chinese research organization to appear on this prestigious list.
JENNY CORTES YBANEZ BEIJING "Research organizations seeking to provide policy advice have existed in China for a long time. But the rapid expansion of think tanks in recent years has been a direct result of top-level government encouragement and planning."
In 2012, at an economic work conference of the CPC Central Committee, General-Secretary Xi Jinping first proposed establishing high-quality think tanks to serve policy making.
In 2013, the third plenary session of the 18th CPC Central Committee passed a resolution that stipulated the creation of "new types of think tanks with Chinese characteristics".
AMBASSADOR NICHOLAS ROSELLINI UNITED NATIONS, CHINA "China is developing very fast. The kind of issues that need to be examined is multiplying as China becomes a much more complex economy, a much more complex society. And therefore I think there's a strong demand I think from the government and from international partners, such as the United Nations, for partners to collaborate on research and policy issues."
DR. WANG HUIYAO, FOUNDER & PRESIDENT CENTER FOR CHINA AND GLOBALIZATION "The existing Chinese system needs really a new mechanism, new forces to put in the system to do the balancing checks and that's where the think tanks have played such a big role and think tanks are getting more attention now probably more than ever before in China in the last 5 years."
A report published by the think tank and civil societies program at the Lauder Institute of the University of Pennsylvania, shows the United States has the highest number of think tanks, at 1,872, while China is in second place with 512, followed by India and the UK.
And as this country's role on the world stage expands, so too will the number of Chinese research organizations, especially as it is spurred on by its central leadership. JCY, CGTN, Beijing.
