China's biggest liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier, named Pan Asia, was launched in Shanghai on April 15 2016. The 290-meter-long vessel will carry about 1.5 million tons of LNG from Australia to China annually once it enters operation later this year.
LNG needs to be kept at minus 163 degrees Celsius during transport, therefore constructing a ship capable of carrying the resource is one of the most challenging tasks in shipbuilding. As a welder with the China State Shipbuilding Corporation and one of just 16 workers who first mastered the necessary skills in 2005, Zhang Dongwei's job is to weld the carrier's lining together, to a thickness of just 0.7mm. Zhang continues to maintain a high level of expertise and extreme precision, as the ship’s lining is very fragile, and there is a risk of rust when the thin lining comes into contact with sweat, leading to possible LNG leakage and explosion.
With the rapid development of China’s economy, enormous technological and infrastructure projects have mushroomed across the country one after the other. Behind these incredible feats of engineering are numerous craftsmen with unrivalled skills and knowledge. In a bid to better understand the secrets behind China’s technical marvels, CGTN followed these master craftsmen to unveil the stunning work they have contributed towards the Chinese dream!
