Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif on Saturday said that US President Donald Trump is in no position to verify Iran’s compliance with the nuclear deal.
Zarif's statement came after Trump defended his decision to "decertify" Iran's compliance with the 2015 agreement in a speech on Friday that evoked US grievances dating back to the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
Trump threatened to "terminate" the landmark deal between Iran and six world powers, also including Britain, France, Germany, China and Russia, unless the US Congress passed stringent new sanctions.
The Iranian foreign minister has warned that his country may decide to pull out of the deal if more sanctions were imposed.
Zarif said Iran's departure will put the country in a position to pursue a peaceful nuclear program that is better and more advanced than the one the deal sought to extinguish.
Trump's announcement has sparked a new war of words between the Islamic Republic and America, fueling mistrust and a sense of nationalism among Iranians.
