The second leg of the Champions League semi-finals will get underway in Spain later today, when Real Madrid host Bayern Munich at the Santiago Bernebeu Stadium. Los Blancos won last week's opener in Germany 2-1, and hope to ride that momentum to another victory at home, or at least a draw in search of a third straight trip to the final, and third consecutive championship. CGTN's Al Goodman reports.
Real Madrid has an enviable position for the second leg of their Champions League semifinals against Bayern, thanks to unlikely goals last week in Munich. Defender Marcelo scored for Real Madrid and then substitute Marco Asensio delivered a second huge blow. But Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo did not score, ending his 11-game scoring streak in Champions League play. Yet coach Zinedine Zidane, trying to lead Los Blancos to a third consecutive Champions League trophy, didn't seem too concerned.
ZINEDINE ZIDANE REAL MADRID COACH "One important thing is that we don't have to change anything we've done. We need to keep our focus, and our determination, but there isn't much we need to change."
AL GOODMAN MADRID "Real Madrid and Bayern are great rivals in the knockout rounds in the Champions League -- numerous battles. But Los Blancos kicked out Bayern the last two times, in the quarterfinals last year, and the semifinals in 2014. The Germans will surely want revenge."
Real Madrid's captain knows that. He says the strong rally by Juventus in the quarterfinals that almost knocked out Los Blancos is a lesson to remember.
SERGIO RAMOS REAL MADRID CAPTAIN "We learn from bad experiences. We need to be focused. We should play this match as if we hadn't scored in Munich, as if it had ended in nil-nil. We need to win against the Germans, and it won't be easy."
But Bayern have found their form this year under veteran coach Jupp Heynckes, who came out of retirement last October to again lead the team. His deep experience even includes leading Real Madrid to a Champions League victory in 1998, and later, managing Bayern when it took home the same trophy in 2013. The trick now is how to stage a historic comeback.
JUPP HEYNCKES BAYERN MUNICH COACH "We need to be more efficient than we were in the first leg. Real Madrid, I think, had 3 or 4 scoring opportunities, if that, and they scored twice. They were really effective. We need to play the way we're accustomed to playing."
An additional challenge for Bayern – injuries may sideline various key players. But Bayern has depth, and was the last team to win a European Cup three times in a row, back in the 1970s – a feat Real Madrid is now hungry for. The Germans will surely not hand it to them easily on a platter, in this clash of titans in Madrid. Al Goodman, CGTN, Madrid.
