China's legislature, the National People's Congress, is planning to tighten up environmental oversight for the Yangtze River. Legislators are busy drafting a protection law to promote green development of Asia's longest river. Cheng Lifeng, a member of the NPC's top environmental protection committee, answered a question from CGTN's Hou Na on this.
Environmental preservation is high on legislators' agenda. Taking a question from CGTN, Cheng Lifeng, a member of the NPC's top environmental protection committee, said the country greatly values the protection and green development of the Yangtze River.
CHENG LIFENG, MEMBER NPC STANDING COMMITTEE "First, we collected suggestions and opinions from experts, entrepreneurs and law enforcement personnel. Then we formulated a general working plan to make clear the law's drafting procedure, working responsibilities, and timetable. We will accelerate our work in drafting the law and finish it within the timeline of our work."
The legislature has made protecting the Yangtze River a top priority.
A working group has been set up. It involves the NPC's Natural Resource and Environmental Protection Committee, the Supreme People's court, the Supreme People's Procuratorate and other central government departments.
The Natural Resource and Environmental Protection Committee is heading the work. Committee members have visited at least six of the 19 provincial-level regions along the Yangtze River Economic Belt.
In other matters, work on a real estate tax law is progressing steadily, said Liu Junchen, deputy head of the committee's Legislative Affairs Commission.
The widely-anticipated property tax law is being considered by the NPC Standing Committee.
