German Chancellor Angela Merkel called for international cooperation to help Africa on Friday during her opening speech for the G20 Summit in Hamburg. Describing the continent as "our neighbor" and a "key focus", she also urged more worldwide support for women’s rights.
Merkel said the world’s most powerful economies needed to shoulder responsibility regarding "profound challenges and pressing tasks around the world" and solve them together through conciliation.
The G20 Summit, held in Hamburg on July 7 and 8, has gathered leaders of the world's top 20 economies and will feature discussion of topics including free and fair trade, climate change and fighting terrorism. Merkel explained that the members would need to find common grounds in order to get appropriate solutions.
