To Syria, as a temporary truce in Dara'a province between the government and the rebel group Free Syrian Army, is set to expire. A Syrian government source tells the DPA news agency that Damascus isn't aware of a truce in the province. The Syrian government has moved forward with a military operation to retake a strategic region along the border with Jordan and the Golan Heights. CGTN reporter Alaa Ebrahim reports.
At first glance, this house seems ordinary but as we enter the basement, we find a weapons storage unit. The Syrian army says rebel tactics like this one is causing civilian causalities as a result of a government campaign to retake southern parts of the country.
GENERAL NIZAR SYRIA ARMY 5TH DIVISION "The presence of all terrorists in any given town in Dara'a is a result of those militants forcing themselves on the locals. Just hours ago, residents of the towns of Ebta' and Da'el requested the army to enter their towns. We hope to regain control and reopen vital roads in the province."
After fierce fighting northeast of Dara'a province, the army regained control of Alma and al-Soura but military sources say the task ahead might include more diplomacy and less combat.
COLONEL HAFEZ SYRIA MILITARY INTELLIGENCE "President Assad said the southern districts must turn themselves in as part of a reconciliation. First they must surrender their weapons and evacuate foreign fighters out of the province through negotiations. Otherwise, we will retake it all by force."
Syrian military sources say that Dara'a province could fall to government hands very quickly and if this happens then the rebels would have lost once again a key area.
Dara'a is the birthplace of Syrian protests against the government. And after seven years into the war, the government is aiming to regain control of the country.
