To South Sudan where the government now says president Salva Kiir is ready to meet opposition leader Riek Machar this month, but that the meeting should be in South Sudan. This comes as the UN, African Union and east Africa's Intergovernmental Authority on Development, all say the two former rivals should meet regularly before November to try to push the country's peace process forward. CGTN's Patrick Oyet sat down with President Kiir's spokesman for more.
ATENY WEK ATENY SOUTH SUDAN'S PRESIDENTIAL SPOKESPERSON "I don't think there is going to be any meeting between president and the opposition leader anywhere outside South Sudan, the president is travelling to Addis Ababa on the invitation of the His Excellency, the Prime Minister of Ethiopia, there is no any scheduled meeting between him and opposition leader Riek Machar."
PATRICK OYET CGTN CORRESPONDENT "There was a proposal that the meeting should take place in Juba in South Sudan, what happened to that proposal?"
ATENY WEK ATENY SOUTH SUDAN'S PRESIDENTIAL SPOKESPERSON "It's Dr. Riek who is not willing to come to Juba and the agreement has it that he should be in Juba."
PATRICK OYET CGTN CORRESPONDENT "Some people say that he is concerned about his security, what do you say about that?"
ATENY WEK ATENY SOUTH SUDAN'S PRESIDENTIAL SPOKESPERSON "His advance team is here, his deputy is here, his wife is here and this should have spelt out clearly to Riek Machar that his coming to Juba should be the same as that of the other senior officials of the I.O. in Juba, by setting up conditions it doesn't seem to help the implementation of the peace agreement, as a leader he should break the deadlock and come to Juba, once he comes to Juba, president Kiir will meet him."
PATRICK OYET CGTN CORRESPONDENT "Could you tell us how committed is president Salva Kiir to the current peace process?"
ATENY WEK ATENY SOUTH SUDAN'S PRESIDENTIAL SPOKESPERSON "President Salva Kiir is the most committed person among all the stakeholders, from among all those who have signed the peace agreement, apart from his natural love for peace, he is the incumbent president so, he wants to continue to govern a country that is peaceful so his primary concern is to see that South Sudan returns to normalcy, so president Salva Kiir is the most committed person, he is only let down by those who are not thinking beyond their personal interest."
