From heavy snow to a lighter note, both literally and figuratively. The Lantern Festival is a traditional Chinese holiday celebrated on the fifteenth day of the first lunar month. It's considered the curtain-closer for the Spring Festival, and this year, it falls on Friday. And Lantern Festival celebrations are already underway across China.
Each year, people in Fuzhou's Mawei District, and Mazu township in Taiwan, share the holiday spirit by sending lanterns across the Taiwan Strait. Because Mawei district and Mazu township both have the character "ma" in their names, the lantern show is often referred to by locals as the "Double Ma" show. The lanterns, designed in different shapes and styles, showcase cross-Strait communication and the Spring Festival spirit. The show's opening night attracted huge crowds keen to catch a glimpse of almost 1,000 lantern sets.
LIU ZENGYIN TAIWAN RESIDENT "During the celebration, Mawei and Mazu express good wishes by presenting lanterns to each other. It's important to communication across the Strait."
And in Nanchang, Jiangxi Province, locals are celebrating the festival with a dragon lantern dance. It's being performed by a team of 200 dancers with a meters-long dragon lantern. It's a traditional way to celebrate the beginning of spring. Over in Handan, northern China's Hebei Province, various folk performances are being held to celebrate the Lantern Festival. One of the eye-catching performances is stilt-walking, which has been a tradition for hundreds of years. CGTN.
