The Beijing International Film Festival officially opened today. And this year, it's offering something new: a Science and Technology Section. Quite appropriately, it's being held at a major Chinese museum - where more than 30 special-effects films will be screened for the next few weeks.
A new part of the festival, the section has five main areas of activity: namely, a special-effects film panorama, popularization of scientific knowledge, selection of excellent films, academic exchange, and a forum. 19 films from both home and abroad will debut to Chinese audiences.
PANG XIAODONG DEPUTY CURATOR, CHINA SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY MUSEUM "The Science and Technology Section realizes the perfect combination of film and technology, making film play a greater role in improving scientific awareness among citizens, and in scientific and technological innovation that better serves the work of society."
The Asian premiere of the BBC film "Oceans" was also held the same day, giving producers and audience members time to interact.
LIU HAOCHEN AUDIENCE MEMBER "I think the combination of film and technology not only let us have a brand new visual and auditory experience, but also let us experience the charm of both film and technology."
Apart from screening special-effects films, the Science and Technology Section will hold a series of activities to make science more accessible to daily life. These include a special-effects film development forum, an awards ceremony, a parent-child scientific film salon, and astronomy classes to be held in a planetarium.
