South Africa will begin their 2019 Cricket World Cup campaign against tournament hosts and favorites England at the Oval later today. The Proteas will rely heavily on their bowling that includes the talented pair of Kagiso Rabada and Lungi Ngidi to unsettled batsmen and restrict their opponents on the seamer friendly wickets in the UK. CGTN's Sias du Plessis has more.
Lungi Ngidi is barely 18 games into his One Day International career and already boasts almost 50 wickets, that is the impact the strapping Titans fast bowler has had for the South African national team and automatically made him a shoo-in for the 15-man squad to do battle at the global cricket showpiece.
LUNGI NGIDI SOUTH AFRICA'S FAST BOWLER "Honestly a dream come true, since we started this journey and since I started playing International cricket, it is something that was always brought to my attention, that there is a World Cup coming, am I looking to be within that squad and now I am here, there is no turning back now, so nothing but excitement going there and it would be a dream come true to win that World Cup."
Ngidi and Kagiso Rabada form a formidable new ball partnership and will give a few opening batsmen nightmares at the prospect of facing two talented bowlers capable of producing deliveries that swing, seamer and bounce in excess of 145kmh.
LUNGI NGIDI SOUTH AFRICA'S FAST BOWLER "There is nowhere to hide in international cricket, so we are okay with that, we have accepted that and putting teams under pressure in terms of bowling good lines and lengths is what we thrive on. So we plan on not changing the game plan at all, just keep doing the same things."
The Durban-born seamer made his international debut against India last year and although he is looking forward to taking on all the other teams in the competition, it is the clash against world's top ranked team at the Rose Bowl in Southampton he can't wait to sink his teeth into.
LUNGI NGIDI SOUTH AFRICA'S FAST BOWLER "Looking forward to India, they had a good series against us here, so in my mind I believe we owe them one. So it would be a very exciting game for me. I'm sure it will be for the guys as well. They're a great team. Don't take that away from them but when they had a good series here, we were missing a few players and once those guys are back, we will see how it evens out a bit."
SIAS DU PLESSIS JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA "It will be the first time the 23-year-old comes up against England on the international stage, but he shows no signs of nerves ahead of his World Cup debut, instead he exudes confidence and when he is at the top of his mark with the new white ball in hand, the burly fast bowler will let the ball do the talking as looks set to make a huge impact on the tournament. Sias du Plessis, CGTN, Johannesburg."
