It's been 11 days since 12 boys and their football coach were trapped in a flooded cave in Thailand. It's still unclear how long they'll have to stay on the narrow elevated slope where they were found Monday evening. Rescuers are weighing their options on how to bring the boys out safely. Rian Maelzer reports from Chiang Rai province, Northern Thailand.
Rescuers emerge from the jungle at the cave entrance carrying people on stretchers. Sadly, for now, it remains just an exercise to train personnel for safely extracting the 12 boys and their football coach from the cave. New footage released Wednesday shows the boys looking in surprisingly good spirits, wrapped in space blankets and receiving medical treatment from a doctor and nurse who are also trained divers. It's not clear if they know that their rescue could be days or even weeks away.
RIAN MAELZER CHIANG RAI PROVINCE, THAILAND "Thailand's interior minister was quoted as saying it's imperative to get the boys out quickly because of the danger of the rains returning and flooding the cave again. But other officials have sounded much more cautious."
NARONGSAK OSOTTHANAKORN CHIANG RAI PROVINCIAL GOVERNOR "We need to be 100 percent confident in order to get the boys out, and it does not have to happen all at one time, it all depends on situation. They don't have to come out at the same time because all of them are in a different situation."
Rescuers also warn against expecting the boys to be brought out hastily, given the perilous conditions.
TANG XIAOLONG CHINESE RESCUER "The difficulty of this underwater rescue I'm afraid, is not something recreational divers could understand. The complexity of it, requires highly professional equipment and training, and on top of that, the diver is not diving alone, but is there to bring out a little kid who has no experience diving."
The boys' parents have been watching video of their children and seemed thrilled to see them well and in high spirits. But they will desperately hope the day will soon come when an evacuation like this one will be for real. Rian Maelzer, CGTN, Chiang Rai.
