The organizers of the PyeongChang Winter Games are using a system that transfers waste paper to money in a bid to minimize the environmental impact of the Games.
The province PyeongChang is to become an eco-friendly, low carbon city, the organizers say, adding that it will be a city of the future and an example to other cities in South Korea and around the world.
Dr. Ann Ji-Whan, the director of the Carbon Mineralisation Flagship Center at the Korea Institute of GeoScience and Mineral Resources, has invented a system known as Carbon Money.
Essentially by recycling paper, the Carbon Money System calculates how much Carbon Dioxide you are saving and gives you cash back for your efforts. It protects the environment from CO2 emissions and saved forests from being cut down to make paper.
At the moment there are two machines like this at the Main Press Center, and the International Broadcast Center - all the money saved here will be donated to charity.
The Olympic movement has the games as its centerpiece but at its heart, it also strives to educate about humanity, culture, and sustainability.
