Israel-Palestine Tensions: Palestinians move to counter US decision
[]
Palestinian authorities are working hard to counter the US' controversial decision on Jerusalem.
The Palestinian Central Council called for an end to the recognition of Israel last month. A committee was later formed to draw up plans to end political, administrative, economic and security coordination with Israel. The cutting of ties was followed by President Abbas' trip to Brussels, where he urged the European Union to play a more active role in the Middle East, and "swiftly" recognize the State of Palestine. The 28-nation bloc reassured their support. Abbas' trip to the EU coincided with US Vice President Mike Pence's visit to the Middle East, which Palestinian leaders boycotted. In Israel, Pence told parliament the relocation of the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem will happen by the end of 2019. The decision has been met by a wave of criticism from a number of states, and deadly protests in the region.
