Guzhen town in Zhongshan, Guangdong Province is known as the Chinese City of Lights. Lights produced in the area have gone on to brighten up all kinds of places, both home and abroad. CGTN's Sun Ye has the report.
The town now produces 70 percent of all the lights used in China. And it's also home to the most spectacular lighting extravaganza in the country. The chairman of one of the biggest producers here, Ou Bing-wen, was among the first in town to get into the sector over 30 years ago, after recognizing the area had the necessary hardware for running a successful business. He says his success now has exceeded his wildest dreams.
OU BINGWEN "We used to do the purchasing on bicycles. Back then, my biggest dream was to go by car, a BMW if things go really well."
The company's way past that goal now. Lights made in Zhongshan, including those from his company, can be found around the world from Disneyland, Starbucks stores, to Olympic venues and the most high profile global summits.
OU BINGWEN "If there is one recipe for success, I would say the town's lighting industry has been most attentive to details, and we always prioritized craftsmanship. That's going to carry us far."
It is not the only company working to get into the limelight.
SUN YE "This is Asia's biggest market for lights, with mostly local brands. The venue says its lights have gone onto illuminate 130 countries and regions around the world."
The 10-story market is a scenic spot in itself. And it's working to ramp up even more international success.
HAMMOND SABERY "I come here every 6 months, for good design, good quality, for what my clients would want back home."
OU GENGQUAN CHAIRPERSON, STAR ALLIANCE MARKET PLACE "The market has seen a growing number of international buyers since it began operation, especially from Southeast Asia and Europe. We plan to better meet their needs."
And for the almost 9,000 companies in the lighting business here, they also plan to dazzle. SY, CGTN, GUANGDONG PROVINCE.
