China's Ministry of Culture and Tourism reported that nearly 122 million people traveled on Monday, the beginning of a week-long National Day holiday. Earlier we spoke to our reporter Meng Qingsheng in Chengdu located in China's Sichuan Province.
MENG QINGSHENG CHENGDU I am inside Chengdu East Railway Station, one of the six biggest transportation hubs in China. On the first day of the holiday, this station recorded the highest number of passenger trips on a daily basis since it was launched in 2011, hitting 180 thousand.
The local railway authority has estimated an increase of more than 9% in passenger trips compared with the same period last year. And 40 trains have been added to cope with the increased traffic.
Traffic volume is expected to ease after the second day of the holiday, and a return journey will bring back the travel rush over the coming weekend when the holiday comes to an end.
