Syria Chemical Attack: 'White Helmets' stir controversy

There's been an unresolved debate about the "White Helmets"—an NGO accused of producing fake videos that blame Syrian government for the chemical attacks in Douma. Experts from the OPCW have finally inspected the site of a suspected chemical attack near Damascus and taken samples, but their findings have yet to be announced. Alaa Ebrahim reports from Douma.
Syrian army units assault the southern districts of Damascus—the last rebel strongholds near the capital. Behind these scenes of destruction, another battle rages on a battle for truth over the suspected use of chemical weapons.
Douma hospital is where rebels say hundreds of patients were treated for injuries from a government chemical weapons attack. Russia blames someone else—accusing British intelligence of staging the attack to provoke a military intervention by the U.S.
And, Damascus says a civil defense organization called the "White Helmets" fabricated evidence to incriminate the government.
Vanessa Beeley – a British blogger quoted by the Russians – alleges the White Helmets have rebel-connections.
VANESSA BEELEY 21ST CENTURY WIRE ASSOCIATE EDITOR "I think what is clear from visiting different districts in East Ghouta as this is the same as it was in East Aleppo. The UK Foreign Office financed 'White Helmets' groups and they were working in very close proximity with terrorist groups in control here—like Jaish al-Islam. We say the White Helmets work with terror groups, and they were a civil defense for the armed groups."
Touring Douma, it's difficult to tell the difference between civilian and military facilities—like this fortified tunnel complex.
ALAA EBRAHIM DOUMA, SYRIA “We are in one of the tunnels located underneath Douma hospital. This is where many of the injured in the alleged chemical weapons attack were taken on April 7th. According to doctors in this hospital, the tunnel was built to both transport wounded fighters and patients. The White Helmet organization was in charge of civil defense in this area. Some of the doctors who operated in here say that most of the White Helmets resources were given to rebels fighting against government forces."
The rebels say countless lives have been saved by the White Helmets. Alaa Ebrahim:"What is your relation with them?"
DR. AMAN AL-TESH DOUMA HOSPITAL "I myself have no relation with them. I saw their cars before they usually transported patients and rubble from the shelled building and working as fire fighters."
Like the facts about the ALLEGED April 7th chemical attack, facts about the White Helmets are contested. Are they volunteers risking their lives to save civilians? Or are they using civilian deaths for publicity, too? Alaa Ebrahim, CGTN, Douma.
