A cholera outbreak in Somalia has killed more than 700 people so far, most of them children. According to humanitarian organization the Norwegian Refugee Council, this is Somalia’s worst cholera outbreak in five years.
The disease has affected thousands in northern Somalia, including many in the Buuhodle and Burco regions, prompting authorities in the breakaway region of Somaliland to term the region a medical emergency area.
The United Nations estimates that more than 50,000 people have been affected by cholera in the past six months. In the 2011 outbreak more than 250,000 people died, but this time health experts said there was increased preparedness.
CGTN’s Abdulaziz Billow reported that more than 360,000 children currently remain malnourished according to UN, and it's these children that remain at risk, with another 3.65 million people said to be in need of aid.
