The new board members of the Bo'ao Forum for Asia have gathered in Beijing. The board of directors aim to strengthen regional economic integration as they look forward to the forum next year. CGTN's Zhao Yunfei reports.
Meet the new leaders of the Boao Forum for Asia. This board of directors has some big names in the group, including Ban Ki-moon, who was elected chairman. The new members say the forum should set its sights beyond Asia.
Ban calls for multilateral cooperation between board members and the Council of Advisers. Zhou Xiaochuan is China's new chief representative at the forum. He says China plays a significant role in the Asian community.
China is committed to openness in trade. During his keynote speech at the opening ceremony of the forum this year, President Xi Jinping promised to further open up the country's economy, lower tariffs and promote global prosperity. At a time of growing protectionist sentiment, Beijing rejects rhetoric referring to a "China threat". Chinese diplomat Li Baodong was appointed the secretary-general of the forum. He says the new board has much work to do as the world today is changing fast.
Li says the new leadership will focus on the development of multiple areas, including technology, healthcare, education and culture. The new board members were announced in April during this year's Boao Forum for Asia. 12 of the 19 members are newly elected.
ZHAO YUNFEI BEIJING "Ban Ki-moon is the former secretary-general of the United Nations. Zhou Xiaochuan is the former governor of the People's Bank of China. And Li Baodong is China's vice-minister of foreign affairs. This gives the new board of directors a vast combined experience in politics, diplomacy and economy. Now the Asian community is looking forward to their advice on tackling world issues and promoting cooperation. Zhao Yunfei, CGTN, Beijing."
