One person was killed and another was injured by an explosion outside a subway station in Stockholm, Sweden on Sunday, local police said.
A 60-year-old man picked an object up off the ground outside the Varby Gard subway station and it detonated in his hand. He was rushed to the hospital, but died shortly afterwards.
A 45-year-old woman, reportedly the man's partner, was also taken to the hospital for minor wounds to her face and both legs, according to Stockholm region police spokesman Sven-Erik Olsson.
Police said in a statement that they were alerted to the blast at the Varby Gard subway station after 11 a.m. local time.
According to local media, the object could have been a hand grenade, but this has not been confirmed by police.
A police spokesman said there was no reason to believe the event was terrorism-related, Reuters reported.
The station has been closed and the crime scene has been cordoned off.
A murder investigation had been launched.
