China Economy: Positive trend continues in April

China's top economic planning agency says the country maintained its positive growth momentum in April as national fixed asset investments increased 7 percent year-on-year.
The April report card was positive. An NDRC spokeswoman said electricity production grew at 6.9 percent year-on-year, and consumption, at 7.8 percent.
The national fixed asset investment increased by 7 percent year-on-year. Total investment was 51.7 billion yuan in the fields of social programs and high-tech sectors.
Seasonal food prices fell slightly, and the average price of 61 food items that are intensively monitored decreased by 1.9 percent, compared with the previous month. The prices of agricultural products and important industrial products remained relatively stable.
MENG WEI, SPOKESWOMAN NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND REFORM COMMISSION "The retail prices of pork in 36 large and medium-sized cities fell by 5.7 percent, and the egg price and the average retail price for 15 different kinds of vegetables respectively decreased by 6.9 percent and 10.9 percent compared with the previous month. The price for key industrial goods, such as steel and coal, fell slightly as well."
The spokeswoman also gave a progress report on two key tasks on the reduction of electricity prices and the evaluation of the implementation of the 13th Five-Year Plan, which covers the period from 2016 through to 2020.
MENG WEI, SPOKESWOMAN NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND REFORM COMMISSION "The first priority is that we have recently implemented the tax rebate policy for power enterprises, and the price of general industrial and commercial electricity were reduced by 7 percent by the first half of May. Second, we have launched the survey evaluation work about implementation of the 13th Five-Year Plan for enterprises and the public. This helps the public understand things like business operation activities of innovative entrepreneurship and business environment. It also collects suggestions from the public on education, healthcare, employment and housing."
The spokeswoman noted the Chinese Brand Day activity has just concluded. The official and relevant departments will further consolidate the quality foundation. She said they will strive to build a standards system in line with international standards and create a fair competition environment by increasing the intensity of supervision.
