Indonesian scientists have found the world's smallest squirrel in a Borneo rain forest in the central part of the country.
The Bornean pygmy squirrel or Exilisciurus exilis was found in Meratus Mountain in south Kalimantan Province, Zainudin Basriansyah, a scientist at the local Lambung Mangkurat University announced on Monday.
"One of the surprising things is the fact that there is a unique and endangered species, the smallest squirrel in the world in Meratus Mountain," he was quoted by Indonesia's Antara news agency as saying.
The species, discovered on September 16 during an expedition, is 73 millimeters long and weighs about 17 grams, said Basriansyah.
"This type of species lives across the island of Borneo, especially the area with an altitude of over 1,000 meters above the sea surface," he said.
