The Beijing International Film Festival is underway, and the nation's capital took the opportunity to introduce policies to advance the film industry here. More cinemas will be built in urban areas, and more financial support will be given to film companies.
During the press conference, the deputy director of the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television, Hu Dong, said Beijing has the largest film industry in the country. The city has 209 cinemas, and film companies in Beijing have produced 350 domestic films in 2017 - above all else in China.
The deputy director also says Beijing will carry out new policies to further promote its film industry, including stronger financial support and encouraging film companies to build more cinemas in the city, especially in urban villages.
HU DONG, DEPUTY DIRECTOR BEIJING MUNICIPAL BUREAU OF PRESS, PUBLICATION, RADIO, FILM AND TELEVISION "In the next 2 to 3 years, more cinemas will be built not only in Beijing's urban areas, but also in villages. We encourage film companies to turn old factories, warehouses and old malls into multiplex theaters, to let more citizens enjoy watching movies on their doorstep."
Over the past two years, Beijing has given 260 million yuan to film producers in producing more high-quality domestic productions. And Hu says the local banks in Beijing will also offer more loans to film companies.
Thanks to their efforts, more high-quality films have been produced in recent years. Wolf Warrior 2, Operation Mekong and Operation Red Sea are some of the highest grossing films among the list.
Meanwhile, Hu also says the government hopes film makers will introduce more domestic films to the world as well as bringing more foreign productions to Beijing.
