LI JIEJUN HONG KONG "Known as the largest tech conference in Asia, the event is packed with representatives from the world's biggest companies and most exciting startups. Dozens of local startups are here, presenting their latest technology in Artificial Intelligence, blockchain and fintech."
The local government has shown unprecedented determination in developing innovation and nurturing its own tech start-ups. It recently pledged to set aside an additional 50 billion HK dollars to support innovation and technology development this financial year, especially in the areas of biotechnology, AI and smart cities.
JAYNE CHAN HEAD, START ME UP HK "Hong Kong has very diversified economies. We know Hong Kong for property, financial services and professional services. That is reflected in some of the startups. But in addition to that, we also have a lot of startups working across the border of areas like the retail technology, gaming, e-sports, and financial technology and AI sectors, are also very vibrant here."
And to become a global innovation hub, Hong Kong has to foster tech exchanges with other areas, especially the nearby cities in the Chinese mainland.
JAY WENJIE XIAO CEO, LEXIN FINTECH "Once there is a good business idea, a lot of startups will come out of the Chinese mainland. We have nurtured so many technology professionals in recent years. So the atmosphere is good. Hong Kong's population and market is small. I think Hong Kong startups should come to the mainland to communicate and explore a bigger market."
China is planning to establish the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, a region currently home to some of the nation's biggest technology companies, like Tencent, Huawei and DJI. Experts say Hong Kong's integration into the Bay Area, would help the city to enhance its research capability. DJI, CGTN, HK.
