Chinese President Xi Jinping and German Chancellor Angela Merkel have exchanged congratulations on their respective re-elections. In a phone call, President Xi congratulated Merkel on winning her fourth term as chancellor. Merkel returned the favor by congratulating Xi on his election as Chinese President at the ongoing session of the 13th National People's Congress.
Xi said China and Germany should set an example of cooperation benefiting both sides, align their strategies, work together in the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative, and achieve common development.
He said the two nations should also lead in the development of relations between China and the European Union, and play constructive roles in promoting strategic mutual trust and cooperation between China and the bloc. The two leaders discussed overcapacity in global steel markets, and agreed to work on solutions within the framework of the G20.
