Thousands of people on Saturday lined the banks of the Chicago River, which had been turned a temporary hue of emerald green – a St. Patrick's Day tradition in the Windy City. The Chicago Plumbers Union started the tradition of dyeing the river green, with a material once used to locate leaks in buildings. Organizers say the powder used is a secret recipe and is environmentally safe.
