Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Geng Shuang slammed the recent-released
US Nuclear Posture Review (NPR), noting the review is an absolute ignorance of the international society's nuclear disarmament call and violation of the "peace and development" theme.
"It is futile for the US side to willfully distort Chinese policies and practices so as to find excuses for the expanding of its own nuclear arsenal," Geng said.
The 2018 Nuclear Posture Review, a guiding principle for future US policy on its nuclear weapons, was published on Friday. It has listed China as an "uncertain international security environment" along with Russia, Iran and the DPRK.
According to Geng, the US has already had the world's largest and most advanced nuclear arsenal, yet still put tons of efforts into building nuclear power, which will consequently exaggerate the imbalance of the world's strategy.
Its decision of lowering nuclear weapon usage standard and abandonment of "nuclear-free world" goal, will bring great risks to nuclear weapons usage while damaging nuclear disarmament process of the international community, Geng said.
Geng reiterated that China's strategy towards nuclear weapons is for self defense and stressed that China will never ever take part in the nuclear preparation competition.
"China has always been supporting the ultimate idea of complete prohibition and thorough destruction of nuclear weapons," Geng noted. "We kept the promises of 'not using nuclear weapons first' and 'not using nuclear weapons to countries and regions that do not have them'," he said.
Geng hopes the US prioritize its responsibility into nuclear disarmament and protect the peace and stability of the international society through solid actions.
