In Shanghai, the second "Peace Arts and Culture Week" has wrapped up at the Fairmont Peace Hotel on East Nanjing Road, one of the city's most recognized landmarks. Liu Renzhi tells us more.
Guests were invited to listen to a jazz band playing songs dating back to the 1920s. The musicians are about 70 years old. Since 1980, the band has developed a strong reputation and comprises veteran musicians. This year's arts and culture week chose them to close out culture week.
PETER HUANG PLAYER OF TRUMPET, CLARINET & BASS "In the past, it was just foreigners who came to listen. After the reform and opening up, people from all around country came to hear us play. They want to listen to famous jazz, songs from Hong Kong, Taiwan and Shanghai in the 1930s."
YANG XUEJIN SINGER "Peace Hotel is a landmark with rich history. The band is unique. Although music will change as time goes by, I will recall Shanghai's old days when performing with the band."
There were also many historical photos of buildings along the Bund on display. A history and architecture expert gave a lecture on legendary figures in Shanghai in the early 20th century and their connection to the buildings.
DAGMAR LYONS HOTEL MANAGER, FAIRMONT PEACE HOTEL "The idea is to highlight the beautiful architecture that set the skyline of Shanghai way back in the 1920s, or the 1900s. Four different types of architecture are visual honored already. Then particularly in our case to highlight our own property which is the landmark of Art Deco within Shanghai and within China."
XIE HUAN "I like this photo exhibition. It shows the contrast between the past and present. The jazz bar is also good with the veteran musicians."
The culture week was organized by Fairmont Peace Hotel and the Huangpu Tourism Bureau. It is held every June. LRZ,ICS FOR CGTN,SH.
