The two-day G20 summit ended in Osaka, which brought signs of progress, yet ended in a stalemate leaving many issues up for discussion at the next gathering. CGTN's Terrence Terashima has more from Osaka.
All eyes were on China-US relations at this year's G20 summit. The first day ended, showing more disparity than unity among members -- a tug of war between promoting multilateral trade and upholding protectionist policies. The meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump was a pivotal moment -- one that could alter the direction of the global economy.
TERRENCE TERASHIMA OSAKA "We have seen one small step in trade and investments during the two-day meeting, which is certainly is good news for the markets. However, some experts still warn that the crisis may not be averted."
There are still downside risks to global growth with continued protectionist moves and reforms to the World Trade Organization far from their goals.
JONATHAN LUCKHURST ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR, SOKA UNIVERSITY "The WTO might actually be the next major focus on trade so with the next few months with the truce between the Chinese and the US on tariffs I think perhaps there will be a refocusing on the WTO specifically as the next key issue on trade."
Leaders agreed women's empowerment with a goal to reduce the labor force gap between men and women by 25 percent by 2025. On climate change, some leaders agreed to sign the Paris Agreement, while the US remained adamant to stay out of it. One of the summit's pressing issues was the increasing amount of plastic waste in the world's oceans. Leaders agreed to end the discharge of marine plastic waste by 2050. The G20 summit in Osaka brought signs of progress, yet ended in a stalemate leaving many issues up for discussion at the next gathering.
JONATHAN LUCKHURST ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR, SOKA UNIVERSITY "This morning was much more negative there were fears that there will be no declaration, simple the fact that there is some form of declaration is a form of success."
The next G20 summit will be held in Saudi Arabia. Terrence Terashima, CGTN, Osaka.
