Seoul has hosted a high-level media dialogue between South Korea and China. The forum aims to strengthen bilateral relations, and as Joseph Kim reports, it has been a constant between the two nations for the past decade.
The regions' media descended on Seoul for the 10th annual China-ROK High-level Media Dialogue. Focusing on the media's role in boosting bilateral ties, Seoul noted the importance of relations with Beijing with the ongoing discussions with the DPRK.
DO JONG-HWAN SOUTH KOREAN MINISTER OF CULTURE, SPORTS AND TOURISM "With the era of peace on the Korean Peninsula now in front of our eyes, for the peace and prosperity of Northeast Asia, it is important for China and the Republic of Korea to maintain close cooperation."
This year's dialogue looked at bilateral exchange in the 4th industrial revolution and the media's responsibility in this time of transition, which participants suggested can further Seoul-Beijing relations.
XU LIN DIRECTOR OF CHINA'S STATE COUNCIL INFORMATION OFFICE "The media is to a certain extent the 'weather forecaster' for Chinese-Korean relations. It plays an important role in building trust between the two countries and acts as a medium to convey public sentiment. We hope the media will become the protector of the China-Korea relationship."
Other areas of common concern were also discussed, including ways to reduce fine dust levels, plaguing both countries.
JOSEPH KIM SEOUL "Leaders of almost 30 major media organizations from China and South Korea came together in Seoul to discuss the media's role in improving bilateral relations. Discussions included ways to increase exchange and promote communication while also stressing the need for cooperation to tackling the growing problem of air pollution."
Launched in 2009, the annual event is held every year in a rotating location between China and the ROK. Media dialogue has been ongoing even when relations between Beijing and Seoul were at a low, following the deployment of the US THAAD anti-missile defense system. The forum aims to promote in-depth discussion between the two countries and strengthen mutual trust and cooperation. Joseph Kim, for CGTN, Seoul.
