Kenya's men's and women's rugby teams have been crowned champions of the cross-border series known as the Elgon Cup, after beating Uganda in Kampala over the weekend. CGTN's Leon Ssenyange breaks down one of the biggest rivalries on the continent.
Uganda and Kenya's fifteen women's sides took to the pitch in what was only a second meeting in close to four years. Their Elgon Cup outings have been suspended since 2015 due to funding and logistical challenges. The Uganda Lady Cranes had a big job on their hands after a 42-18 first leg defeat two weeks ago. And they were on the back foot midway the first half when Okullu Grace got Kenya's first points from the boot. Two tries from Leah Ndugu and Olando Philadelphia would follow as Kenya dominated and took an 18-0 lead at the break. In the second half Kenya racked up three more tries to lead 35-0. Claire Aneno's offered little reprieve for the hosts.
WINNIE ATYANG UGANDA WOMEN'S CAPTAIN "We need to work more together, and this is a stepping stone for us to make sure we build onto the next level, because the biggest task ahead of us is to qualify for the World Cup."
Kenya claimed a 77-23 aggregate win over two legs. A positive start as they plan to pitch camp in South Africa prior to the continental Women's World Cup qualifiers in August.
PHILADELPHIA OLANDO KENYA WOMEN'S CAPTAIN "We have a young team. Most of our senior players retired, and we wanted to test ourselves with this game, where we are as a team. We need to work on so many things."
With the job already done for the Kenya Lionesses, it was the Kenya Lions' turn to put up a fight for the men's title. They carried a three-points deficit from the first leg. Uganda got off the blocks first. Ronald Kanyanya crossing the white line for the hosts first and only try in the match. Kenya responded almost immediately with Thairu Melvin touching down minutes later. Jacob Ojee would then extend Kenya's lead to 8-5 with a penalty going into the break. Two second half tries by Ojee would then seal the victory late on, 16 points to 5.
PETER KILONZO KENYA MEN'S CAPTAIN "We went in knowing Uganda would come at us, so we tried so hard so we could score first, and be ahead on the scoreboard. We believe that what mattered was the first and last 10 minutes in the game."
Kenya now head into their engagement with Zimbabwe next month buoyed by a fourth successive Elgon Cup title.
LEON SSENYANGE KAMPALA "It is double celebrations for Kenya. They walk away with both the women and men's titles. For the hosts Uganda, there will be more work to put in to end their now four-year Elgon Cup trophy drought. Leon Ssenyange, CGTN, Kampala, Uganda."
