Libya's rebel forces, known as the Libyan National Army, claim they have gained full control over the country's airspace and are getting closer to taking the capital, Tripoli. The forces, led by General Khalifa Haftar, have been trying to seize the city from Libya's UN-recognized government since early April. CGTN's Adel El Mahrouky has more.
Libya's government of national accord has had a hard blow this weekend. Their eastern rivals, the LNA forces have destroyed an aircraft workshop, where its drones and fighter jets take base. Right after the air strike, General Khalifa Haftar's Airforces announced full control over Libya's entire airspace.
AHMED AMER DEPUTY EDITOR IN CHIEF, AL AHRAM AL ARABY "The LNA has managed to acquire a strong and advanced air defense systems, which it has been using in its fight against the militias. So I think the report of controlling the air space could be up to 95% accurate. LNA then held massive strikes against their air bases. All this support the announcement. It doesn't mean that no breach will happen. Drones or small aircrafts can still take off from the airports which the Western militias control."
Last June LNA claimed controlling the country's airspace as well. It didn't last for long. And Analysts do not believe that the latest announced would tip the scale in the war over Tripoli, which the Haftar lead forces began in April.
AHMED AMER DEPUTY EDITOR IN CHIEF, AL AHRAM AL ARABY "There is unlimited supply of weapons from International to the rival parties. We've seen that during the last months the LNA couldn't advance further towards Tripoli. Turkey is a strong supporter to the Government of National accord forces. That has made the GNA forces an equal opponent to the LNA. That will drive the war to last longer."
The Militia forces allied to the UN recognized GNA, have suffered great losses in their air power. Arms support however from regional countries has so far delayed their defeat. Adel EL Mahrouky, CGTN, CA.
