The holiday season this year in the Democratic Republic of Congo has been mixed with political uncertainties. Voters were expected to head to the polls to elect a new president, the day before Christmas eve, but the general elections have been re-scheduled to take place on December 30th. Leon Ssenyange reports from the capital Kinshasa.
Just a little glitter ahead of the festive season. And few Christmas caps to brighten the mood. For some, it's a time to enjoy.
FRANCIS MUKE KINSHASA RESIDENT "We can't say that because we have tough times we should postpone Christmas. Christmas is Christmas, it must be celebrated."
A positive feel it is already. It's could however have been better.
LEON SSENYANGE KINSHASA, DRC "This is the grande central. Every festive season hundreds gather here to celebrate. This year the mood is different."
On the outskirts of the capital. Eugene Maluka finds something to buy for her daughter. It's been a tough time she says.
EUGENE MALUKA MAGASE RESIDENT "I am just from work. I have not even been paid, but it's Xmas tomorrow. What can I do?"
DR Congo goes to the polls on Sunday. There's been fears that violence could erupt during this period. That hasn't damped the anticipation to go and vote.
EUGENE MALUKA MAGASE RESIDENT "We want a new Congo. We shall go and vote."
Many here will be hoping for a peaceful Christmas. And despite the lingering political concerns, there is still hope for an even peaceful election. LS, CGTN, Kinshasa, DRC.
