Far from the fighting in northern Myanmar, in the country's biggest city, riot police have broken up an anti-war protest. Dave Grunebaum has the story from Yangon.
Police with helmets, shields and clubs shut down a demonstration that was showing support for the victims of Myanmar's on-going armed conflicts in the northeastern part of the country. Before Saturday's protest, authorities told organizers they did not have permission to demonstrate. About 300 protesters showed up anyway with plans to march down some of Yangon's busiest streets and when police blocked them off they chanted anti-war slogans and held up signs calling for peace.
Scuffles broke out between police and some of the demonstrators as well as a few journalists covering the event. Several protesters were detained by authorities. About six-thousand people have been displaced by fighting in Myanmar's northern Kachin State during the past month. This has led to several student peace protests in different parts of the country.
