China's friendship with Algeria stretches back to 1958 when the countries first established full diplomatic ties. In 2014, relations were upgraded to a comprehensive strategic partnership. As a symbol of the deepening friendship between the countries, China donated 40 million US dollars towards the construction of the Algiers Opera House in Algeria's capital. CGTN's Meng Qingsheng went inside the performing arts hub to explore the changes it has brought to the city's cultural life.
Introducing a vibrant cultural life to Algerians, the Algiers Opera House provides new opportunities for stage arts professionals to pursue their dreams. It also provides a venue for ballet students to hone skills.
NAMOUS SENOUCI FATIMA ZOHRA, DIRECTOR ALGERIAN NATIONAL BALLET "We've been waiting for something like this for a long time now. We were in need of a large stage, and an opera house to present comprehensive shows."
Madame Namous Senouci was a professional ballerina. She received training from the Bolshoi Ballet Academy in Russia, one of the most prestigious ballet schools in the world. Now she is passing on the expertise to youngsters.
NAMOUS SENOUCI FATIMA ZOHRA, DIRECTOR OF ALGERIAN NATIONAL BALLET "I have been training these young girls since they were five years old. Now they are around 25 and 26. They have grown into soloists and ballerinas."
The opera house covers an area of 18 thousand square meters. The Beijing Urban Construction Group spent over two years completing the project which seats 1,400 people. Inside, the design takes on Algeria's traditional patterns and details.
MENG QINGSHENG ALGIERS, ALGERIA "This Opera House was launched in 2016 as a gift from the Chinese government to Algeria. More than 90 percent of its building materials were transported from China by sea. The project not only provides cutting-edge theater and stage technologies, but also creates new opportunities for Algerians to pursue their artistic dreams."
Mr. Saoudi is the general director. He says the opera house is an exceptional destination for the whole community to enjoy quality pastime with top-notch facilities.
SAOUDI NOUREDDINE, GENERAL DIRECTOR ALGIERS OPERA HOUSE "In 2017, there were between 140 to 150 activities held here. This year, we may reach the same number or more than last year."
The opera house is the first of its kind in Algeria's modern history. While the venue sets an ideal stage for art performers, it requires more to foster a unique culture.
NAMOUS SENOUCI FATIMA ZOHRA, DIRECTOR ALGERIAN NATIONAL BALLET "I hope that in the future Algiers Opera House will have its own classic ballet because all the necessary means are available now to make it happen."
This year marks 60 years of diplomatic ties between China and Algeria. A number of cultural exchange events will take place at this opera house. It not only marks an enhanced friendship but also heralds a new phase of cooperation. Meng Qingsheng, CGTN, Algiers, Algeria.
