According to a list released by the Chinese government on Thursday, 42 universities along with disciplines from 95 universities were identified as "world-class". Tsinghua University, Peking University and Renmin University of China were among those outlined in the list.
Named "Double First-Rate", those who made the list were selected based on the criteria from experts and government departments.
The selection of the universities and disciplines were stressed to be in "construction" rather than an authentication of level, which also means that the list is not permanent. Related authorities such as the Ministry of Education will keep supervising the process and management for decisions on any change to the list.
Approved by the State Council, the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Finance, and the National Development and Reform Commission, the project started its operational phase in January 2017.
The project, in the form of a three-step strategy envisaged three things: Several universities and majors in China recognized as world-class by 2020; an increase in the number of worldwide first-rate universities and disciplines and a significant improvement in the overall strength of higher education by 2030; and to become one of the most powerful countries in terms of higher education by 2050.
