Once again the line between sports and politics has been blurred. The latest incident occurred in Spain, as the region of Catalonia were in the midst of a referendum over independence.
Scores were injured in protests, and the safety of local citizens was put in danger. Things were so bad, that Barcelona, the crown gem of sports teams in the area, almost cancelled their game with Las Palmas. However, the squad decided to play the game behind closed doors, in order to prevent any further risk of violence.
Barca tried to postpone the game, but the La Liga denied their request, so thousands were left to wait outside the Camp Nou, located in Barcelona, the capital of the Catalonia region on Spain, while the game was played in an empty arena.
