The only person convicted in the killing of the estranged half-brother of DPRK leader Kim Jong Un has been freed after completing her sentence. Last month, murder charges against Vietnamese Doan Thi Huong were dropped after she agreed to plead guilty to a lesser charge in Kim Jong Nam's death. Rian Maelzer tells us more from Kuala Lumpur.
RIAN MAELZER KUALA LUMPUR It was an assassination that seemed straight out of spy novel. The estranged half-brother of a world leader killed in a crowded air terminal by a deadly nerve agent apparently applied by two young women.
But in the end, one of the accused, Indonesian Siti Aisyah, was unexpectedly freed after murder charges against her were dropped in March.
And on April 1, her co-accused Doan Thi Huong was sentenced on a lesser charge of causing hurt, which meant she was freed Friday after serving barely one month more in custody.
She was whisked from the prison to an immigration detention center before being taken to KL international airport and deported to Vietnam.
HISYAM TEH POH TEIK LAWYER FOR DOAN THI HUONG "This message was prepared by her yesterday. She says thank you so much to the Malaysian government, the judge, the attorney general, she thanked the Kajang prison who took care of her very well she said, she thanked the Vietnam embassy and bar council, the lawyers, the Vietnam government. She also thanked all the media. And she said 'I'm very happy. Thank you all. I love you all a lot.'"
It will be seen as an unsatisfactory end to the investigation into the murder, which caused a serious rift in DPRK-Malaysia relations.
The two women always maintained they were tricked into taking part in the plot, believing it to be for a video prank shoot.
Police say that the four DPRK men who were the masterminds of the assassination fled Malaysia right after the attack, and they are unlikely ever to face justice.
Doan, meanwhile, can look forward to putting her two years of imprisonment behind her and starting to rebuild her life. Rian Maelzer, CGTN, Kuala Lumpur International Airport.
