We spoke to Professor Yu Jie of the London School of Economics and Political Science, on the topic of term limits. Here's what she had to say.
PROFESSOR YU JIE LONDON SCHOOL OF ECONOMICS AND POLITICAL SCIENCE "China is in a classic crossroads scenario, whereas you do need to further economic reform, and stronger agenda to run the country properly. Therefore you do need a stronger pair of hands to give a clear steer to the country. It's not just a stronger leader, rather a stronger mandate and a consistent stronger agenda to lead economic reform. As we witnessed in the past, 40 years of economic reform is an unfinished journey, and there are still lots of difficulties we need to tackle. So there's the low-hanging fruit we have taken already, what left behind is those high-hanging fruit for some reason, which the party has to focus on."
