Friday marks the 200th anniversary of Karl Marx's birthday. The philosopher is widely respected in China. Wu Weishan, a renowned Chinese sculptor and director of the National Art Museum of China, has incorporated Marx into his sculpture designs. CGTN went to see Wu Weishan to talk about his creations.
WU WEISHAN CURATOR, NATIONAL ART MUSEUM OF CHINA "I have made statues of well-known Chinese figures like Confucius and Laozi. Karl Marx played a critical role in world history, especially as a driving force for the international communist movement. So Marx is one of my sculpture designs. Four years ago I created another statue of Marx, together with his fellow philosopher Freidrich Engels. Two years ago I visited Marx's hometown Trier in Germany and received a warm welcome. I've put the bronze statue in a local square which dates back to Roman times. Karl Marx will be standing there forever, awaiting visitors from all over the world."
WU WEISHAN CURATOR, NATIONAL ART MUSEUM OF CHINA "Chinese culture doesn't just belong to China, but the whole world. Art and history are both an integral part of Chinese culture. For instance, one of my bronze statues of Confucius has been erected in Brazil, while my Pierre de Coubertin statue is in the Olympic Museum at the headquarters of the International Olympic Committee. By sharing these sculptures around the globe, China is making a greater contribution to the world and helping to build a community with a shared future for mankind."
