China's new research vessel "Kexue," which aptly means science, has returned to port in Xiamen in southeast China's Fujian Province, after completing a scientific expedition spanning over a dozen days.
Twelve domestically-designed underwater gliders loaded on the vessel were used to research deep-water cold vents in the South China Sea.
Experts say the cold vents may hold the secrets of the evolution of life on earth, going back to the earliest ecosystems formed by micro-organisms.
The underwater glider network provides a new technology platform for China's research in the deep.
