Tomorrow's closing ceremony at the PyeongChang Winter Olympics will include a handover to Beijing which will host the games in 2022. Zhang Yimou is directing an eight-minute performance at Sunday's event. CGTN's Tracey Holmes has more.
The Opening Ceremony for the Beijing Summer Olympic Games in 2008 is widely regarded as the most stunning - ever. The creative genius behind that ceremony is internationally renowned movie director, Zhang YiMou. His talents have been sought again by the organisers of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics. And a worldwide audience will be treated to some of his work tomorrow night at the handover ceremony in PyeongChang. Although it will last just eight minutes, Zhang YiMou has been devising the show for about a year.
ZHANG YIMOU, DIRECTOR BEIJING ARTS PROGRAM PYEONGCHANG OLYMPICS CLOSING CEREMONY "Our performers have been preparing for the show for two months. It's about a year since I took on the task. At that time, I was directing films and carried the idea of such a thing in my mind. So I had been going through a period of creating the basic elements for the show. Four months ago, I had a complete design for the artistic performance."
The director and his team of performers arrived in PyeongChang last week to make the final preparations. The director says we should expect human and artificial intelligence interaction.
ZHANG YIMOU, DIRECTOR BEIJING ARTS PROGRAM AT PYEONGCHANG OLYMPICS CLOSING CEREMONY "The eight minutes will include beautiful colours and Chinese cultural characteristics. But these elements will provide a new feeling and will be showcased in a way that the public might not expect, with artificial intelligence incorporated into the performance."
Equipment began arriving at the Olympic Stadium last week but organisers kept security tight so no secrets were divulged. One thing Zhang Yimou did tell us was how he developed the concept for Sunday's handover Ceremony.
ZHANG YIMOU, DIRECTOR BEIJING ARTS PROGRAM AT PYEONGCHANG OLYMPICS CLOSING CEREMONY "All performances show specific scenes. This time, I will use an artistic form that everyone is familiar with. Of course, it will be related to the Winter Olympics. In brief, we'll showcase winter sports. No matter how good a performance is, it needs to be understood by the public. First of all, you can understand our whole performance without the help of language. This is also the aspect I put the most effort into."
