Relay race is one of the most exciting games at any sports event. But recently, an innovative game at the Dalian campus of Lu Xun Academy of Fine Arts in northeast China is much more than speed.

In the photos taken on October 13, 2017, rather than competing their athletic strengths, students are sitting on chairs and making sketches of a model on the racetrack.

The school's physical education director Qin Guangyu told Shenyang Evening News that the sketch relay game is not a recent invention, but a tradition. "We didn’t expect it would receive so much attention online. The 4x50 meters sketch relay race has been held for more than 30 years."

As many wonder how the relay race goes, Qin explained that every contestant has two minutes to paint, who is required to run back and forth when time is up to pass the pencil, as the relay baton, to the next teammate.

"Running fast cannot guarantee you to win the game, because we will add up the scores of speed and the quality of sketches, which are judged by a panel of art experts at school," said Qin.

Founded in 1938, Lu Xun Academy of Fine Arts is regarded as one of the top three art academies in China.
