So what are the similarities and differences between the 001A and its older sister, the Liaoning. CGTN's Timothy Ulrich has more.
The new carrier 001A is very similar to China's first aircraft carrier, the Liaoning - retaining the ski jump for launches and a conventional engine.
The Liaoning can carry 36 aircraft: a fighter group of 24 jets and a helicopter battalion of 12. But the 001A's modified flight deck layout provides more space and hangar storage, allowing it to carry more aircraft. Internal modifications mean there is more space for the crew. The command and control island also has more powerful Chinese-made sensors and electronic equipment than the Liaoning.
