China's Foreign Ministry says the meeting between the leaders of the DPRK and the United States had a positive, historic significance. Spokesperson Geng Shuang said the achievements demonstrate progress toward denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula and a political settlement.
GENG SHUANG, SPOKESPERSON CHINESE FOREIGN MINISTRY "A good beginning is half done. After long-term hostility and confrontation between the DPRK and the US, it is of important and positive significance for the leaders of the two countries to sit down together for talks on equal footing. The issues concerning the Korean Peninsula are both unique and complex. It is hard to solve them overnight. Parties concerned should have persistence, be patient and make unrelenting efforts."
The ministry spokesperson also commented on Mike Pompeo's expected follow-up visit after the summit. The US secretary of state is scheduled to arrive in Beijing today after holding talks in Seoul.
GENG SHUANG, SPOKESPERSON CHINESE FOREIGN MINISTRY "It is both mutually beneficial and in the interest of the world that China and the US maintain a healthy and stable relationship. Pompeo's visit is a vital high-level exchange between China and the US. China hopes it will enhance understanding, help manage differences, and expand cooperation with the US."
