The women's speed skating mass start event highlighted the penultimate day of the PyeongChang Winter Olympics. China's Li Dan and Guo Dan were among those hoping to earn medals, but both failed to reach the podium, with Li taking fifth place and Guo finishing tenth.
Seeking a second gold in S. Korea, 25-year-old Nana Takagi of Japan succeeded in adding the top medal to her win at the women's team pursuit earlier in the week.

In the men's mass start, S. Korea's Lee Seung-hoon surged ahead on the last lap to claim a tight victory, much to the delight of the home crowd. The 29-year-old timed his burst perfectly, and held off Belgium's Bart Swings and Koen Verweij of the Netherlands, to become the inaugural champion in this new Olympic event.
