Huawei Dialogue: Company CEO meets with two American tech gurus
Updated 17:25, 09-Jul-2019
Huawei says it will cut production over the next two years. It comes as the United States tries to isolate the Chinese tech giant internationally. Despite the challenges, the company's founder, Ren Zhengfei, remained positive as he spoke during a panel discussion hosted by CGTN's Tianwei at its corporate headquarters in Shenzhen. Our correspondent Ge Yunfei has more.
A highly-anticipated dialogue among three tech giants. On Monday afternoon, Huawei founder & CEO Ren Zhengfei held a dialogue with two American technology gurus, discussing topics ranging from geopolitics, to the China-U.S. trade war, to a techno-utopian future. A future, that may bring Huawei some challenges, according to its 75-year old leader.
REN ZHENGFEI HUAWEI FOUNDER & CEO "In the next two years, we'll have to reduce our total production revenue by 30 billion U.S. dollars to around 100 billion dollars. But after a big update, we'll bounce back to be stronger."
George Gilder is world-renowned as one of the leading economic and technological thinkers of the past forty years. As a techno-utopian advocate, he believes a technology cold war will do no one any good.
Ren says modern society has to respect rule of law, not the rule of jungle.
REN ZHENGFEI HUAWEI FOUNDER & CEO "Human society didn't develop on the rules of jungle but by mutual balancing, cooperation and establishing orders. Even if you're a lion, you still cannot eat all the rabbits. A technological decoupling or even cold war between China and the U.S. will do harm to both countries. We need global cooperation."
Professor Nicholas Negroponte is a co-founder of the MIT media lab. He helped drive the birth of the computer industry, the internet, and much of the technology we use in our daily lives.
CGTN's Tianwei hosted the dialogue.
GE YUNFEI SHENZHEN  "Facing skepticism, misunderstanding and even hostility against Huawei, the company is taking every measure and approach to reshape its brand in the world. And this dialogue--Coffee with Ren--is part of that attempt."
CGTN live-streamed the entire dialogue on its digital platforms. And a 60-minute long special edition of this dialogue will be broadcast on CGTN's World Insight on Tuesday night. Ge Yunfei, CGTN, Shenzhen.
