China's top swimmer Sun Yang went to Indonesia having won gold medals in the 200, 400, and 1500 meter freestyles at both the Olympics and the World Championships, with only a 200 meter gold from the Asian Games missing from his collection. Well now it is complete after the 27-year-old topped the podium on Sunday to complete what he calls a golden grand slam. Mike Fox has more.
Sun Yang's most recent victory makes him the first male swimmer in history to earn Olympic and World Championship gold medals at every freestyle distance from 200 metres to 1500 meters. After winning silver in the 200-meter freestyle race at the 2014 Incheon Asian Games, Sun finally has the last piece in his collection of golden accolades.
SUN YANG 200m FREESTYLE GOLD MEDALIST "Actually, the most difficult event for me in the Asian Games is the 200-meter freestyle. All the other long-distance events are easier for me. Competitors from other countries are eager to beat me here, but I think I am experienced in many aspects and made a good start for China's men's swimming team."
A three-time Olympic gold medalist and nine-time world champion, Sun is the most decorated Chinese swimmer of all-time.
CHINESE FAN SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT "I learned about Sun Yang at the London Olympics when I was a junior school student. And I became a fan of him at the Rio Olympics. Now I am a senior school student and I am really a big fan of Sun and I will always support him."
CHINESE FAN STUDENT'S FATHER "My daughter always asks me to bring her to wherever Sun Yang is competing. Last year our family went to Budapest to watch the FINA World Championship because of her. She is in the middle of hard studying right now, but she begged me for a long time and I decided to take her here."
In addition to his supporters, Sun is also surrounded by the media. The "Sun Yang" fever will last for the first week in the pool as he will participate in 4 events and is expected to add to his medal haul. CGTN.
