The Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC) is pushing for a new facility in Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) to test driverless vehicles, according to Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK) on Monday.
The goal of the project is to bring together companies from different industrial and commercial sectors along with telecommunication firms, to create a platform for automakers to promote self-driving technology.
HKPC has already gathered over 20 firms, including major local telecommunication companies and technology developers, to form the "Hong Kong Connected Vehicles Cluster" to facilitate the initiative.
Some of those companies have already built their own facilities to conduct self-driving tests, according to Lawrence Poon from the HKPC, who is coordinating the initiative. In his opinion, companies in Hong Kong have already realized the importance of autonomous driving technology.
Hong Kong is expected to start preliminary testing of driverless cars as soon as next year, said Lawrence Poon.
